Home Goods Essentials for New Renters in the Central Valley

A move-in checklist for first-time renters — cookware, bedding, towels, small appliances — at prices that won't wreck your deposit.

    Day-one checklist

Moving into your first apartment in Fresno or Clovis? Here's the no-fluff move-in checklist we hand to new renters every week: cookware set, sheets and pillows, towels, a microwave or air fryer, basic storage, a shower curtain, a trash can, and cleaning supplies. Total damage at our pricing: under $300.

At big-box retail, the same list runs $700–$1,000. The difference is liquidation pricing — same product, dramatically lower cost — and the fact that we carry most of these categories in one place so you're not driving to four stores.

Add a basic laundry hamper, a dish-drying rack, a small step stool or folding step, and a power strip with surge protection. None of those are exciting and all of them get used the first week.

What to splurge on, what to save on

Splurge on the mattress and the bedding. You spend a third of your life there, and cheap bedding shows wear within months. We carry quality sheets and pillows at bin prices, so 'splurge' here still means $40–$80, not $300.

Save on cookware. A basic 10-piece nonstick set covers everything a new cook needs and runs $40–$70 at our pricing versus $150+ retail. Upgrade to cast iron or stainless when you actually start cooking, not before.

Save on small appliances. Air fryers, blenders, coffee makers, and microwaves are our highest-turnover home goods category. Most are overstock or open-box and work perfectly.

Splurge a little on knives. A single quality 8-inch chef's knife and a paring knife will outperform a 15-piece block set from any big-box store. We carry name-brand cutlery as overstock regularly and pricing is excellent.

    Kitchen starter kit

If you're building a kitchen from scratch, here's the no-frills list: 10-piece nonstick cookware set, a sheet pan, a colander, a chef's knife and paring knife, a cutting board, a set of mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons, a wooden spoon and silicone spatula, can opener, peeler, and a basic 12-piece dinnerware set.

Add a microwave or air fryer (or both — they do different things), a basic coffee maker, an electric kettle, and a toaster. That's a fully functional kitchen for under $200 at our pricing.

    Bathroom and bedroom essentials

Bathroom: shower curtain and liner, bath mat, 4 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 4 washcloths, toilet brush, plunger, and a small storage caddy. Add a basic shower caddy or over-toilet shelf for storage in tight bathrooms.

Bedroom: queen sheet set (extra set if you can swing it — laundry day is much easier with a spare), 2 pillows, a duvet or comforter, a basic bed frame, and a nightstand or small dresser. A bedside lamp and an alarm clock round it out.

    Don't forget

Storage bins, a small toolkit (hammer, screwdriver set, tape measure), command strips, and a basic first-aid kit. None of it is exciting; all of it gets used in the first week.

Extension cords and a couple of surge protectors. Older Fresno rentals often have outlets in inconvenient places, and you'll thank yourself for buying them on move-in day instead of mid-Netflix-binge week three.

    Cleaning supplies on day one

Whatever the previous tenant left behind, you'll want to start fresh. A basic cleaning kit on move-in day: all-purpose spray, glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner, dish soap, sponges, microfiber cloths, paper towels, trash bags, and a broom and dustpan. Add a vacuum if your place has any carpet.

Clean before you unpack. It's much easier to wipe down empty cabinets, scrub a bathroom, and vacuum bare floors than to do it around boxes. Set aside the first two hours of move-in day for cleaning and you'll thank yourself for the rest of the lease.

Buy a roll of shelf liner for kitchen cabinets and bathroom drawers. It's a few dollars, takes 30 minutes to install, and dramatically improves the look and cleanliness of older rental cabinets.

    Budget breakdown

Here's a realistic move-in essentials budget at our pricing: cookware and kitchen basics $80, bedding and pillows $60, towels and bathroom basics $40, small appliances (microwave or air fryer, coffee maker) $80, cleaning supplies and storage $40. Total: around $300.

Compare that to a single trip to Target or Walmart for the same list — easily $700–$900 — and you can see why we get so many first-time renters as customers. Same essentials, dramatically lower outlay.
