Mattress Buying Guide: Picking the Right Bed in Fresno
Firmness, size, foam vs hybrid, and what wholesale pricing really means when shopping Ashley mattresses in the Central Valley.
Firmness by sleep position
Sleep position is the single biggest factor in picking the right mattress firmness. Side sleepers do best on medium-soft because the shoulders and hips need to sink in to keep the spine aligned. Back sleepers want medium-firm — enough give to fill the lumbar curve but enough support to keep the hips from sagging. Stomach sleepers should go firm to prevent the lower back from arching.
If you're a combo sleeper (most adults are), aim for medium. It's the most forgiving firmness across positions.
Try in-store. We have floor models you can actually lie on for 5–10 minutes per bed — that's the only real way to know. Photos and specs don't replace your own back. Bring the pillow you sleep on if you can; the wrong pillow on a great mattress feels like a bad mattress.
Foam vs hybrid vs innerspring
Memory foam contours closely, isolates motion (no waking up when your partner rolls over), and runs warmer. Modern foams have gel and copper infusions that help with heat, but if you sleep hot, foam might not be your friend.
Hybrids combine an innerspring base with foam comfort layers. They sleep cooler than pure foam, offer better edge support, and tend to last longer. For most adults, hybrid is the sweet spot.
Traditional innerspring is the most affordable category and the bounciest. Great for kids' rooms, guest rooms, and anyone who doesn't want the hug-you feel of foam.
Latex (less common, more expensive) is the longest-lasting option — 15+ years isn't unusual. It's bouncy like innerspring but contours more like foam. If you have the budget and like a 'floating' feel, latex is worth a look.
Size guide
Twin fits kids and small guest rooms. Twin XL adds 5 inches of length — better for taller kids and teens. Full works for single adults in smaller apartments. Queen is the most popular size in America and fits two adults in most bedrooms. King gives each partner the same space as a twin XL. California King is 4 inches longer and 4 inches narrower than King — best for tall sleepers.
If you have a partner and the room for it, size up. Going from queen to king is the single most-cited bedroom upgrade by adults who've done it. The extra space dramatically improves sleep quality for couples, especially if one partner is a restless sleeper.
What wholesale pricing really means
Mattress retail is one of the most marked-up categories in the country — markups of 5x to 10x are normal at chain mattress stores. That's why you see 'sales' year-round with 60% off prices that are still profitable for the store.
Our pricing skips all of that. We carry Ashley and other major-brand mattresses at true wholesale, often 50–70% below MSRP, because we buy overstock and closeouts rather than new-season retail. Same mattress, same warranty in most cases, dramatically lower price.
The warranty piece is important. Most major-brand mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty that applies to the original purchaser. Our mattresses include the standard manufacturer warranty in the vast majority of cases — ask before buying if it matters to you and we'll confirm by model.
Caring for your mattress
A few simple habits double the life of any mattress. Use a fitted mattress protector from day one — it's the single best $25 investment you'll make for the bed.
Rotate the mattress 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months. Most modern mattresses are one-sided (you don't flip them), but rotating evens out wear from your sleep position.
Use a real foundation or platform bed designed for the mattress type. Putting a heavy hybrid mattress on slats that are too far apart will void the warranty and create premature sagging.
